Political Trends in the African Great Lakes Region
Despite recent elections in Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda and upcoming elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Great Lakes region shows worrying trends toward electoral authoritarianism and political fragmentation, with new divisions that intensify the potential for confrontation. Second-Order Effects in Sub-Saharan Africa
The crisis in Libya has raised fears among security analysts that the ongoing conflict will destabilize the already fragile states of the Sahel and strengthen the hand of affiliates of al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) operating in Mauritania, Mali, and Niger.
