United Nations, New York — UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, spoke as a special guest in a panel discussion following the launch of UNIFEM’s flagship report, Progress of the World’s Women 2008/2009, Who Answers to Women? Gender and Accountability, at United Nations Headquarters on 18 September.

Launching the report, UNIFEM Executive Director Inés Alberdi said the fifth volume of Progress of the World’s Women provided an overview of the status of women worldwide, along with an in-depth analysis of an important area in which they are seeking to bring change in their lives, their communities and countries.

“Accountability is one such area,” said Alberdi. “Accountability from a women’s rights perspective exists when women are able to get explanations from those in power for actions that affect them, and can set in motion corrective actions when those responsible fail to promote their rights. Building accountability for gender equality is not a luxury, it is a necessity.” Alberdi added that the issue of accountability was at the core of UNIFEM’s work.
