The Africa Governance Monitoring and Advocacy Project (Afrimap), an intitiave of the Soros Foundation Network that works with national civil society organizations to conduct systematic audits of governmental performance, has announced the winners of its call for papers on the Charter for Democracy, Elections, and Governance in Africa. The Charter was adopted by heads of state at the African Union (AU) summit in January 2007, and serves to reinforce the AU’s stated emphasis on democracy promotion and good governance in African countries. The papers, three of which are in English and one in French, include comparisons with other international charters and protocols on democracy and good governance, as well as critical analysis of the Charter’s content and its enforcement measures. Translations of the winning papers will be available soon.
